This mid-18th century Grade ll listed building is most noted for its associations with George Orwell (b Eric Blair). It was his parents' retirement home after moving out of No 3 Queen Street and he spent time here in the 1930s. Although originally a single residence it is now two - numbered 34 and 36. No 34 has its entrance via the garden on the left whose wrought iron railings are themselves Grade ll Listed.

Spirella was founded in 1904 and, instead of selling via retail outlets, focuses exclusively on bespoke designs by its trained and certificated 'Corsetiers' who visited clients in their homes. Mrs Denny is one of them. The Spirella company ceased in 1969.

Elizabeth is the wife of John Burlong Denny who set up home at Montague House four years ago, having returned to Southwold from his home in Lincolnshire to run the rapidly expanding family tailoring business at No 11 Market Place.
